Well known as Mia Catalano on the CW’s One Tree Hill, Kate Voegele made her way through Vancouver to play her first show in BC to a sold out crowd at The Media Club.

Opening for Voegele was BC native Shawn Hlookoff. Hlookoff set was stripped down and acoustically driven. Hlookoff definitely has stage presence and a voice that can captivate any audience. His performance was a memorable one, which is hard to say nowadays with so many bands that sound the same.

Voegele took the stage around 9:00pm with an ecstatic welcome from the crowd. Voegele’s set comprised a majority of songs off her latest album “A Fine Mess”; however, she did sing a few hits off her debut album “Don’t Look Away.” During Voegele’s encore she sang “Hallelujah” a cover song by Leonard Cohen.

One of my favourite songs of the night was the catchy and memorable “Who You Are Without Me”. During her entire set Voegele interacted and bantered with the crowd. During one point of the night, Voegele thanked the concertgoers for spending their Friday night with her. It’s nice and refreshing to see an artist actually talking to audiences; I find the bigger the artist gets, the less and less they choose to talk to the crowd.

The only disappointing element of Voegele’s performance was for her entire set she sat down. Early in the night, Voegele addressed the crowd letting them know she was under the weather, and therefore would be sitting for her performance. Although it would have been nice to see Voegele stand up and move around, the stage was quite small with little room to move about.

The Media Club is not a huge arena; it’s a tiny holding only a few hundred people, but it is always nice to play to a more imitate and interactive crowd. There are no barricades, no security up front, just the artist and the fans. There is no big production, or glitz and glamour, just a very humble young lady doing what she loves to do- share her music with the world.
